Amber, at a glance.

The beginning

Fossilized tree resin.

Amber is an organic gem material, rather than a mineral crystal.

The palette

Honey and beyond.

Amber can show a range of tones and degrees of transparency. Ask about any color treatment.

Scratch hardness

About 2 to 2.5.

Amber is soft and needs protection from abrasion, heat and chemicals.

The occasion

Meaning beyond a month.

Amber is not a standard modern monthly birthstone. Choose it for its material, design or personal connection.

Choose with the whole piece in mind.

Look into the piece.

Notice transparency, texture and inclusions without assuming that every inclusion is ancient or natural.

Ask what the material is.

Clarify amber, copal, reconstructed material or imitation, plus any known treatment.

Enjoy the craftsmanship.

Carving, setting and the balance of the design can matter as much as the material’s appearance.

Check comfort and care.

Confirm dimensions, length and fastening. Plan to keep this soft material away from rough wear.

Identity, treatment and documentation.

Amber can be heated, clarified, pressed or reconstructed, and sometimes dyed. Copal and resin imitations also occur. Ask about identification, known treatments and the basis of any claims about age, origin or inclusions. Appearance alone does not confirm those details.

Ask what is known, what remains unconfirmed, and whether the information is supported by documentation. An independent gemological report can help address identification and detectable treatments. It is different from an appraisal and does not promise a resale value.

Bring these questions to the conversation.

  1. What is known about the material, its origin as natural or laboratory-grown where applicable, and any treatments?
  2. What are the exact dimensions, and does any stated weight describe one stone or the total?
  3. What is the metal, and what is known about the age and condition of the piece?
  4. Can I see additional photos or a video in ordinary lighting?
  5. What fit, fastening, stringing or resizing details should I consider?
  6. What documentation is available for this exact item, and which purchase policies apply?

Include the item number when you contact us. Details from one piece should not be assumed to apply to another.

Care for the entire piece.

Use a soft cloth with lukewarm water and a little mild soap when appropriate for the whole piece. Avoid steam, ultrasonic cleaners, solvents, alcohol-based cleaners, heat and abrasive polishing. Store separately to prevent scratches and apply perfume before putting the jewelry on.

The most delicate material, treatment or construction detail may determine the right method. A gemstone’s scratch hardness does not mean the setting is safe from damage. Check clasps, stringing and prongs regularly, and stop wearing a piece if a stone is loose or a fastening is unreliable.

Make it part of your own style.

Warm up a simple neckline.

An amber pendant beside cream, black or soft linen makes its honey tones easy to enjoy.

Let a carving be the detail.

Give an expressive amber design space beside a plain shirt or fine knit.

Mix texture gently.

Warm gold, soft fabric and amber can make a considered combination. Keep rough bracelets away from the amber surface.

A warm gesture. A meaning of your own.

Amber does not need a monthly birthstone assignment to make a thoughtful gift. Choose it for someone drawn to warm color, natural history, carving or an unexpected vintage detail.

The meanings associated with gemstones belong to cultural traditions and personal interpretation. They are not established medical benefits or guarantees of protection, luck or financial results.
