Tourmaline, at a glance.

The palette

A wide color world.

Tourmaline occurs in many colors, sometimes with more than one color in a single crystal.

The family

A mineral group.

Tourmaline is a group of related minerals, rather than one color or a single variety.

Scratch hardness

About 7 to 7.5.

Protect it from hard blows, heat and sudden temperature changes.

The birthstone

An October choice.

Tourmaline shares October with opal, offering a different kind of color story.

Choose with the whole piece in mind.

Start with the color.

Compare the hue and brightness in ordinary light. Color names do not replace a look at the exact stone.

Ask about special names.

Terms such as Paraíba should be supported by appropriate identification. A trade name alone does not establish geographic origin.

Notice the design.

Tourmaline can share a setting with diamonds, pearls or other materials. Judge the full piece and its condition.

Confirm the practical details.

Ask about size, dimensions, fastening and care for every material in the setting.

Identity, treatment and documentation.

Some tourmalines are heated or irradiated to alter color. Ask what is known about the stone’s identity and treatment, and whether an independent report exists. Paraíba-related terminology and any origin claim need clarification for the particular gem.

Ask what is known, what remains unconfirmed, and whether the information is supported by documentation. An independent gemological report can help address identification and detectable treatments. It is different from an appraisal and does not promise a resale value.

Bring these questions to the conversation.

  1. What is known about the material, its origin as natural or laboratory-grown where applicable, and any treatments?
  2. What are the exact dimensions, and does any stated weight describe one stone or the total?
  3. What is the metal, and what is known about the age and condition of the piece?
  4. Can I see additional photos or a video in ordinary lighting?
  5. What fit, fastening, stringing or resizing details should I consider?
  6. What documentation is available for this exact item, and which purchase policies apply?

Include the item number when you contact us. Details from one piece should not be assumed to apply to another.

Care for the entire piece.

Use lukewarm water and mild soap if suitable for the whole piece. Avoid steam and ultrasonic cleaning, high heat and abrupt temperature changes. Companion materials such as pearls or coral may require an even gentler method.

The most delicate material, treatment or construction detail may determine the right method. A gemstone’s scratch hardness does not mean the setting is safe from damage. Check clasps, stringing and prongs regularly, and stop wearing a piece if a stone is loose or a fastening is unreliable.

Make it part of your own style.

Give pink a clean backdrop.

A tourmaline ring can bring a considered note of color to cream, charcoal or denim.

Keep an unusual pendant close.

Let a detailed pendant lead at the neckline rather than competing with a busy print.

Try a brooch differently.

Pin a tourmaline brooch to a jacket or sturdy scarf, checking that the fabric can support its weight.

An October birthstone. A personal shade.

Tourmaline offers a colorful October birthday choice or a gift centered on a favorite shade. Let the setting and the wearer’s style guide the decision.
