A little knowledge

Amber, at a glance.

Four details behind a beautiful discovery.

The beginning

Fossilized tree resin.

Amber is an organic gem material, rather than a mineral crystal.

The palette

Honey and beyond.

Amber can show a range of tones and degrees of transparency. Ask about any color treatment.

AmberA closer look

Scratch hardness

About 2 to 2.5.

Amber is soft and needs protection from abrasion, heat and chemicals.

The occasion

Meaning beyond a month.

Amber is not a standard modern monthly birthstone. Choose it for its material, design or personal connection.

A little knowledge, a better choice

What makes
a piece yours?

You do not have to know every gemstone term to make a thoughtful choice. Start with these four questions.

Read David’s buying guide ↗

01

Look into the piece.

Notice transparency, texture and inclusions without assuming that every inclusion is ancient or natural.

02

Ask what the material is.

Clarify amber, copal, reconstructed material or imitation, plus any known treatment.

03

Enjoy the craftsmanship.

Carving, setting and the balance of the design can matter as much as the material’s appearance.

04

Check comfort and care.

Confirm dimensions, length and fastening. Plan to keep this soft material away from rough wear.

How to make it yours

A little character. Entirely you.

Ideas to wear, pair and enjoy your next discovery.

Mix texture gently.

Warm gold, soft fabric and amber can make a considered combination. Keep rough bracelets away from the amber surface.

For a milestone. For someone. For you.

A warm gesture. A meaning of your own.

Amber does not need a monthly birthstone assignment to make a thoughtful gift. Choose it for someone drawn to warm color, natural history, carving or an unexpected vintage detail.

The meanings we give to amber.

Stories add another layer to a beautiful piece. Choose the meaning that feels personal.

Time

A connection with the past.

Honey tones can become a personal reminder of warmth or affection.

Nature

A closer look.

Textures and inclusions invite curiosity, while their identity and age deserve careful verification.

Memory

A story to keep.

Good to know

A few good questions.

Is amber a monthly birthstone?

Amber is not a standard modern monthly birthstone. Choose it for its warmth, craftsmanship, natural history or a personal meaning. Read more on David’s ↗

What should I ask before choosing a piece?

Amber can be heated, clarified, pressed or reconstructed, and sometimes dyed. Copal and resin imitations also occur. Ask about identification, known treatments and the basis of any claims about age, origin or inclusions. Appearance alone does not confirm those details. Read more on David’s ↗

How should I care for it?

Use a soft cloth with lukewarm water and a little mild soap when appropriate for the whole piece. Avoid steam, ultrasonic cleaners, solvents, alcohol-based cleaners, heat and abrasive polishing. Store separately to prevent scratches and apply perfume before putting the jewelry on. Read more on David’s ↗

Can I use layaway?
