New Orleans Street Car- Desire

Based upon the popular theatrical piece by Tennessee Williams, “A Streetcar Named Desire”, New Orleans has become world famous for their public transportation system, the streetcar. The Desire street car ran from 1920 to 1948. It was also the most popular form of transportation within the city during that time. The streetcar ran down Bourbon, through the French Quarter, to Desire Street , and back up to Canal. In that play, Tennessee Williams writes about a woman named Blanche and tells of a route she took —"They told me to take a streetcar named Desire, transfer to one called Cemeteries and ride six blocks and get off at—Elysian Fields”
