Topaz occurs in a range of colors. Treatments produce much of the blue topaz seen in jewelry.
The material
Topaz is different from quartz. Names such as “smoky topaz” can be used loosely; ask what the stone actually is.
Scratch hardness
Topaz resists scratching but can split along a cleavage direction if struck.
The birthstone
Topaz shares November with citrine. Choose the shade you love in any season.
Compare pale sky, brighter blue and deeper blue tones in everyday light.
A protective design and sound prongs matter, particularly for rings that may receive knocks.
Heating and irradiation are common for blue topaz. Coatings and misleading trade names need separate clarification.
Look at dimensions and how the piece sits, rather than relying on carat weight alone.
Much blue topaz owes its color to irradiation followed by heating. Some colors use a surface coating, which requires gentler handling. Confirm the actual material and treatment for the item; a color name or collection label is not a gemological identification.
Ask what is known, what remains unconfirmed, and whether the information is supported by documentation. An independent gemological report can help address identification and detectable treatments. It is different from an appraisal and does not promise a resale value.
Include the item number when you contact us. Details from one piece should not be assumed to apply to another.
Clean gently with lukewarm water and mild soap if suitable for the whole piece. Avoid steam and ultrasonic cleaners, hard blows, high heat and abrupt temperature changes. Coated topaz needs particular protection from abrasion.
The most delicate material, treatment or construction detail may determine the right method. A gemstone’s scratch hardness does not mean the setting is safe from damage. Check clasps, stringing and prongs regularly, and stop wearing a piece if a stone is loose or a fastening is unreliable.
Topaz earrings or a pendant can give a simple shirt a crisp point of color.
A broad or geometric center stone feels striking with a clean sleeve and minimal accessories.
A brooch or detailed bracelet adds character to a jacket, knit or evening look.
Topaz makes a personal November birthday gift, while its many colors invite year-round wear. Choose around the wearer’s style, favorite shade and everyday routine.
