Amethyst, at a glance.

The color

A world of purple.

Amethyst ranges from pale lilac to deeper violet and reddish purple.

The family

Purple quartz.

Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz. Material sold as “green amethyst” is commonly called prasiolite.

Scratch hardness

7 on the Mohs scale.

Protect the stone from knocks, scratching, heat and sudden temperature changes.

The birthstone

February’s purple choice.

A familiar February birthstone with an appeal that lasts all year.

Choose with the whole piece in mind.

Choose your purple.

Compare the stone in ordinary light. Pale lilac and saturated violet offer different moods.

Look beyond the center stone.

Notice the proportions, metalwork and companion stones. Their balance can make a familiar color feel unexpected.

Ask what the material is.

Confirm the gemstone’s identity and any known treatment, especially with green stones or unusual trade names.

Make comfort part of the choice.

Check ring size, pendant dimensions, earring weight and clasps before deciding.

Identity, treatment and documentation.

Amethyst can be natural or laboratory-grown, and treatment information varies by item. Ask what is known about the exact stone. “Green amethyst” is a trade term commonly used for prasiolite, a green quartz; it should not be confused with purple amethyst.

Ask what is known, what remains unconfirmed, and whether the information is supported by documentation. An independent gemological report can help address identification and detectable treatments. It is different from an appraisal and does not promise a resale value.

Bring these questions to the conversation.

  1. What is known about the material, its origin as natural or laboratory-grown where applicable, and any treatments?
  2. What are the exact dimensions, and does any stated weight describe one stone or the total?
  3. What is the metal, and what is known about the age and condition of the piece?
  4. Can I see additional photos or a video in ordinary lighting?
  5. What fit, fastening, stringing or resizing details should I consider?
  6. What documentation is available for this exact item, and which purchase policies apply?

Include the item number when you contact us. Details from one piece should not be assumed to apply to another.

Care for the entire piece.

Use lukewarm water and a little mild soap when the entire piece permits it. Avoid steam, heat and abrupt temperature changes. Some amethyst can fade with prolonged intense light. Ask before ultrasonic cleaning if the stone’s condition or treatment is uncertain.

The most delicate material, treatment or construction detail may determine the right method. A gemstone’s scratch hardness does not mean the setting is safe from damage. Check clasps, stringing and prongs regularly, and stop wearing a piece if a stone is loose or a fastening is unreliable.

Make it part of your own style.

Let purple meet cream.

A pendant or earrings beside an ivory shirt gives the color a little space.

Wear a bold detail simply.

An expressive amethyst ring can be the focal point beside a plain knit or tailored jacket.

Make the mix personal.

Pair purple with warm gold, soft pink or a favorite vintage piece. Choose balance rather than a matching set.
