More than a beautiful piece

A gentle glow.
A strong sense of self.

Pearls bring light to a look without demanding the spotlight. A classic strand feels different from a sculptural pendant or an unusual baroque shape. Choose the version that feels like you.

At David’s, discover vintage, antique and modern designs with details that reward a closer look. See each listing for the piece’s own story and specifications.

A little knowledge

Pearl, at a glance.

Four details behind a beautiful discovery.

The glow

Luster is the language.

Light reflected from the surface and inner structure gives pearls their distinctive glow.

The origin

Grown in a mollusk.

Pearls can be natural or cultured, and freshwater or saltwater. Ask which applies to your piece.

PearlA closer look

Scratch hardness

About 2.5–3 Mohs.

Pearls are soft and need gentle handling, careful storage and protection from chemicals.

The birthstone

One of June’s gems.

Pearl is a June birthstone, alongside other June gemstone choices.

A little knowledge, a better choice

What makes
a piece yours?

You do not have to know every gemstone term to make a thoughtful choice. Start with these four questions.

Read David’s buying guide ↗

01

Follow the luster.

Notice how clearly and brightly light reflects from the pearl. Ask for close views in ordinary light.

02

Enjoy the shape.

Round, drop, coin and baroque shapes create very different moods. Pick a silhouette you enjoy.

03

Know your pearls.

Ask about natural or cultured status, pearl type and any known color treatment. Do not assume a white pearl is untreated.

04

Check the finishing details.

Look at the clasp, stringing, earring backs and setting. For a strand, length matters as much as pearl size.

How to make it yours

A little character. Entirely you.

Good to know

A few good questions.

Which month is associated with pearl?

Pearl is one of the birthstones for June. You can also choose it simply because you love it. Read more on David’s ↗

What should I ask before choosing a piece?

A cultured pearl forms in a mollusk with human assistance; it is not the same as an imitation pearl. Some pearls are bleached, dyed or otherwise treated. Ask about pearl type, treatment and the condition of the stringing or setting. Read more on David’s ↗

How should I care for it?

Wipe pearls with a soft damp cloth after wear. Put them on after perfume, hairspray and cosmetics. Avoid steam and ultrasonic cleaners. Keep strands away from prolonged soaking and let damp stringing dry fully before wearing; store separately from harder jewelry. Read more on David’s ↗

Can I use layaway?
