This is a retelling of an old legend. Nobody knows exactly who first told it, but it has been passed down for centuries and is often traced to ancient Persia. We have told it here the way a grandmother might tell it to a child at the end of a long day.

The caravan had stopped for the night at the edge of the desert. The camels were folded down in the sand like tired old men, and the fire snapped and hissed as the last light left the hills.

A little girl named Shirin lay on her back on a woven blanket, staring straight up. The sky above her was turning from gold to rose to the deepest, softest blue she had ever seen.

"Grandmother," she said, "why is the sky blue? Why isn't it red, like the fire? Or green, like the river?"

Her grandmother pulled her shawl tighter and smiled the slow smile of someone who has been waiting a long time for exactly that question.

"Ah," she said. "Because of the stone."

The Stone Beneath Everything

"Long, long ago," the grandmother began, "before there were caravans, before there were cities, before there were even names for the rivers, the world needed something to stand on. Everything needs something to stand on, little one. You stand on the sand. The sand stands on the rock. And the rock?"

"The rock stands on… more rock?" Shirin guessed.

"Deeper than that. Far below the deepest well, far below where the roots of the oldest trees can reach, the whole earth rests on a single stone. A sapphire, so enormous that no caravan could cross it in a thousand years. Blue, all the way through, like the heart of a deep lake."

Shirin's eyes went wide. "A sapphire? Like the one in the merchant's ring?"

"Just like that one," her grandmother said. "Only so much bigger that the merchant's ring would be a single grain of sand beside it."

Why the Sky Is Blue

"And here is the secret," the grandmother whispered, leaning close so the fire lit up her face. "A sapphire is not a quiet stone. It holds light inside it and gives it back. All day long, the great sapphire beneath the world shines its blue upward, through the rock and the water and the earth, and the sky catches that light like a cloth catches dye."

"So the sky is blue because the stone is blue?"

"The sky is the stone's reflection," her grandmother said. "When you look up, you are looking at the color of the jewel that holds up the world."

Shirin was quiet for a long time, looking up.

"Then what happens at night?" she asked. "Where does the blue go?"

"At night," said her grandmother, "the stone rests, just like you. Its blue grows deep and dark, and the stars come out to keep watch over it until morning."

A Stone That Keeps Promises

"Is that why the merchant wears a sapphire?" Shirin asked. "So the stone will hold him up too?"

Her grandmother laughed softly. "Perhaps. People have always believed that a sapphire brings the same steadiness to the one who wears it. A stone strong enough to hold the whole world is strong enough to hold a promise. That is why men give them to the women they love, and why kings and holy men wear them. A sapphire says: I will not move. I will not break. I will be here tomorrow, the same as today."

She reached over and tucked a strand of hair behind Shirin's ear.

"Someday, someone will give you a stone like that. And when they do, you will look up at the sky and remember this night."

Shirin fell asleep under the deepening blue, dreaming of a great jewel beneath the sand, shining upward forever.

The Legend and the Truth

Of course, today we know the sky is blue because of the way sunlight scatters in the air, not because of a stone beneath the earth. But for centuries, this legend gave sapphire a special place in people's hearts. It became known as the stone of heaven, a gem connected to the sky itself, to faithfulness and to promises that last.

Maybe that is why, even now, a sapphire can stop you in your tracks. Hold a fine blue sapphire up to the light, and you will see what the old storytellers saw: a little piece of the sky, waiting to be worn.
