Moonstone & Labradorite, at a glance.

Moonstone

A floating glow.

Adularescence is the soft, billowing light effect associated with moonstone.

Labradorite

A directional flash.

Labradorescence can reveal vivid colors as the stone and light change angle.

The family

Feldspars, with care.

These materials are about 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale and can be damaged by impact.

The birthstone

Moonstone belongs to June.

Moonstone is a June birthstone. Labradorite has no standard modern monthly assignment.

Choose with the whole piece in mind.

See the light move.

Ask for a short video from several angles. A single photograph may capture only one moment of the effect.

Confirm the material.

Moonstone, rainbow moonstone and labradorite names can overlap in trade. Ask for identification of the exact stone.

Choose the right setting.

Pendants and necklaces can enjoy the light with less impact than a ring. Check clasps and stringing as well as the stone.

Look at the whole piece.

Some designs include pearls or other materials. Their care needs may determine the gentlest cleaning method.

Identity, treatment and documentation.

Moonstone is generally not treated, but trade terminology can be confusing. Material sold as rainbow moonstone is often a variety of labradorite. Ask about the exact identification and any known treatments or assembly, rather than assuming a name establishes the material.

Ask what is known, what remains unconfirmed, and whether the information is supported by documentation. An independent gemological report can help address identification and detectable treatments. It is different from an appraisal and does not promise a resale value.

Bring these questions to the conversation.

  1. What is known about the material, its origin as natural or laboratory-grown where applicable, and any treatments?
  2. What are the exact dimensions, and does any stated weight describe one stone or the total?
  3. What is the metal, and what is known about the age and condition of the piece?
  4. Can I see additional photos or a video in ordinary lighting?
  5. What fit, fastening, stringing or resizing details should I consider?
  6. What documentation is available for this exact item, and which purchase policies apply?

Include the item number when you contact us. Details from one piece should not be assumed to apply to another.

Care for the entire piece.

Use a gentle cloth and lukewarm mild soapy water only when suitable for every material and construction detail. Avoid steam, ultrasonic cleaning, hard blows and rapid temperature changes. Pearl-strung or glued designs need individual advice and should not be soaked.

The most delicate material, treatment or construction detail may determine the right method. A gemstone’s scratch hardness does not mean the setting is safe from damage. Check clasps, stringing and prongs regularly, and stop wearing a piece if a stone is loose or a fastening is unreliable.

Make it part of your own style.

Keep the neckline simple.

A labradorite pendant can reveal a new flash as you move. Let a plain shirt provide the backdrop.

Layer with intention.

A necklace with texture or pearls can be a focal point on its own, or sit beside a fine chain.

Let a soft glow lead.

A moonstone bracelet brings a quieter effect to the wrist. Keep hard bangles from striking it.

A June moonstone. A flash of personal meaning.

Moonstone makes a June birthstone choice. Labradorite can be chosen simply for its shifting color. Both invite a gift centered on light, individual style or a memory of your own.

The meanings associated with gemstones belong to cultural traditions and personal interpretation. They are not established medical benefits or guarantees of protection, luck or financial results.
