Garnet is the stone of fire and light, of love and safe return. For thousands of years it has been carried by travelers, worn by warriors and given by lovers. Here are our favorite legends and true stories of garnet. Follow the links to read each one as a full tale.

🕯 Noah's Lantern

An old legend says that during the great flood, Noah hung a glowing red stone inside the ark to light the darkness, and many came to believe it was a garnet.

🍎 Persephone's Pomegranate

The word garnet comes from the Latin for pomegranate, whose seeds it resembles. In Greek myth, Persephone ate six pomegranate seeds in the underworld, and so had to return there each year, bringing winter to the world.

⚔️ The Warriors' Stone

Garnets have been found in jewelry from ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome. In 2009, a man with a metal detector in a farm field in Staffordshire, England, discovered the largest hoard of Anglo-Saxon gold ever found: thousands of pieces, many of them sword fittings glittering with garnets cut into tiny shapes and set like stained glass. For warriors, garnet was a stone of courage and protection.

🌾 Drops of Fire in the Fields

In the hills of Bohemia, farmers found deep red garnets in their plowed fields, and in the 1800s these little stones became the glowing Bohemian garnet jewelry that Victorian Europe adored.

🌈 Not Only Red

Garnet isn't one stone, it's a whole family, and it comes in nearly every color: wine-red pyrope and almandine, purplish rhodolite, orange spessartite, bright green tsavorite and the rare, fiery green demantoid, once a favorite of the Russian jeweler Carl Fabergé.
