Citrine, at a glance.

The color

Golden possibilities.

Citrine ranges from yellow to orange and brownish orange.

The family

A variety of quartz.

Citrine is the yellow-to-orange gemstone variety of quartz.

Scratch hardness

7 on the Mohs scale.

Protect it from scratches, hard blows and abrupt temperature changes.

The birthstone

A November choice.

Citrine is one of November’s birthstones, alongside topaz.

Choose with the whole piece in mind.

Find your golden shade.

Compare pale yellow, honey and deeper orange tones in ordinary light.

Look at the cut.

Notice how the stone handles light. A distinctive shape can make a simple design feel expressive.

Ask about the material.

Heating is common in the citrine market. Ask about known treatment and item details.

Choose the right proportions.

Check dimensions, earring weight or pendant size. A bold color should still feel comfortable.

Identity, treatment and documentation.

Much commercial citrine is produced by heating other quartz varieties. Ask about known treatment rather than assuming the color is untreated. Judge the color, condition, metalwork and overall design together.

Ask what is known, what remains unconfirmed, and whether the information is supported by documentation. An independent gemological report can help address identification and detectable treatments. It is different from an appraisal and does not promise a resale value.

Bring these questions to the conversation.

  1. What is known about the material, its origin as natural or laboratory-grown where applicable, and any treatments?
  2. What are the exact dimensions, and does any stated weight describe one stone or the total?
  3. What is the metal, and what is known about the age and condition of the piece?
  4. Can I see additional photos or a video in ordinary lighting?
  5. What fit, fastening, stringing or resizing details should I consider?
  6. What documentation is available for this exact item, and which purchase policies apply?

Include the item number when you contact us. Details from one piece should not be assumed to apply to another.

Care for the entire piece.

Mild soapy water is generally suitable if the rest of the piece allows it. Avoid steam cleaning, high heat and abrupt temperature changes. Store away from prolonged intense light, and ask before ultrasonic cleaning when treatment or condition is uncertain.

The most delicate material, treatment or construction detail may determine the right method. A gemstone’s scratch hardness does not mean the setting is safe from damage. Check clasps, stringing and prongs regularly, and stop wearing a piece if a stone is loose or a fastening is unreliable.

Make it part of your own style.

Warm up your neutrals.

Citrine beside cream, denim or earthy linen makes a relaxed, sunny combination.

Give gold an evening glow.

A citrine pendant or earrings can bring warmth to black, chocolate or an open neckline.

Play with a vintage detail.

Let an unusual cut or textured gold setting be the focal point of a simple outfit.

A November birthstone. Warmth to give.

A thoughtful November birthday gift or a personal dose of golden color, citrine brings warmth to any season.
